Interpreting Public Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence-Based Video Content on the Instagram Platform

This study examines how Instagram users understand, evaluate, and interpret artificial intelligence (AI)-generated video content and how such interpretations shape perceptions of authenticity, usefulness, and social risk. Drawing on Social Construction Theory, Perception Theory, and Stuart Hall's Reception Theory, the study adopts a qualitative descriptive design within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, documentation, and literature review with four purposively selected active Instagram users in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, with NVivo supporting thematic coding and visualization. Findings show that users can recognize AI-generated videos by visual anomalies such as unnatural movement, stiff expressions, overly smooth imagery, and implausible objects. Evaluations are ambivalent: AI video is valued for education, entertainment, information, creativity, and promotion, yet is associated with misinformation, manipulation, fraud, and declining trust. Interpretation is shaped by platform experience, source credibility, captions, comments, visual realism, and digital literacy. The study underscores the need for transparent AI labeling, critical verification practices, and platform accountability.
